Jens B @Jens97 Aug 22 Thanks to everyone who endures the ordeal of filmmaking so that I can sit on the couch and watch something. *Sex Is Comedy* is about shooting a sex scene—a process that turns out to be far more difficult than one might initially assume. The film is often very funny, yet it also prompts reflection through its keenly observed details. At the same time, it walks a fine line between sympathy for the director, who is determined to realize her vision, and aversion to the manipulative methods she uses to get what she wants—often against the wishes of her actors. In any case, this was my first Catherine Breillat film, and hopefully not my last. See more 02/21/2022 This is really a lengthy sketch and as such ends with a touching scene between the female director and her actress. Otherwise it's a slog through the purported making of a movie that doesn't seem to have a point. There's very little about it that's even remotely funny, by the way. I have found many of Mdme Breillat's films tough going and have often failed to understand her purpose. This, however, was a fascinating study of the process of making a film that kept me entranced. The acting was excellent and the story may be her most accessible. From what I've read, it is somewhat autobiographical. But, as a study in the process, it ought to be required viewing in a film studies curriculum.
