Young Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment) is haunted by a dark secret: he is visited by ghosts. Cole is frightened by visitations from those with unresolved problems who appear from the shadows. You leave slightly asquirm. You know it will linger. It becomes a clammy, chilly movie building toward a revelation that you cannot predict. As I say: I cannot tell you. You'd hate me if I did. Bruce Willis brings quiet vulnerability to his role, while Haley Joel Osment delivers a remarkable performance that gives the film its aching heart. Muted visuals, restrained ghostly appearances, and meticulous direction create an eerie, melancholy mood, though the deliberately slow pacing occasionally tests patience. The now-famous twist also loses some of its original surprise for viewers who know it in advance, and the film leans heavily on its reveal. Yet the ending earns its power by deepening the story rather than merely shocking the audience.
