What to Know

Critics Consensus

Spaceman's poignant themes are partly brought to life by sensitive performances from a talented cast, but it fails to consistently engage with its most interesting ideas.

Audience Says

Spaceman definitely isn't for everybody, but it does a decent job of adapting a slow, cerebral story that's easier to engage with in print.

No matter how much Sandler makes the audience feel for Jakub, it can be hard to sustain an entire picture with nothing more than overarching sadness. And “Spaceman” never finds another register. Go to Full Review

Spaceman is ultimately Sandler’s show but it’s one astronaut movie that ultimately seems very short on rocket fuel. Go to Full Review

For whatever reason, everyone in this film seems to have been instructed to speak with the lethargic, hypnotic delivery of a depressed masseuse. Go to Full Review

Sandler mostly exhibits moments of loneliness and despair, and it is not too often that his character is seen freaking out to a high degree. Go to Full Review

Erwin v @Erwin53 1d Spaceman presents Adam Sandler in a role that is both fragile and deeply human. He plays a lonely, somewhat broken man who is accompanied by an exceptionally intelligent and gentle spider. This unusual companion guides him through reflections on love, connection and the true meaning of relationships. What makes the film so powerful is its ambiguity. You are never entirely sure whether the spider is real or a creation of his mind. That uncertainty gives the story a dreamlike quality, as if you are drifting through another universe together with him. The emotional impact builds quietly but relentlessly, and by the final scenes it becomes overwhelming. The ending moved me to tears. The music deserves special praise as well. It elevates the entire experience and adds to the hypnotic, almost otherworldly atmosphere. An unforgettable, deeply touching film and absolutely a must-see. It is more an introspection on relationships, the distance between souls, and how we break and possibly repair relationships with those we love(d). I found the story beautiful and it hit me with meaning, personally. If you come to this movie expecting sci fi thriller, you won’t like it. You’ll be annoyed with its pace and all you’ll see is happy Gilmore. If you come with an open mind, you’ll find something rather beautiful. And a pretty phenomenal performance from a great actor. I also thought the musical choices and camerawork were very good, and the flashbacks were impeccable, as was the color grading. I really liked the scene where he walks in the river in his suit, which starts at the beginning and is revisited at the end. The spider, although a bit unrealistic, connects with the character, helping him, and creates a bond with him, returning to him and dying by his side. I think the message itself isn't very original, but the way they managed to convey it is well done. There could also have been more focus on the main character's wife, and I think the ending could have been a little better. In conclusion, the film isn't an Oscar winner, but it manages to convey the message in a very interesting way, and even though it's a slow film, it manages to be captivating with the flashbacks and camera work, definitely making us stop and think a little. Definitely worth a watch! See more Patrick B @Patzz Jan 7 What I would like to say is: cosmic horror seeks connection through understanding, while Earth man seeks understanding through connection. But what really happens is: local Earth man only understands wife after forming connection with cosmic horror beyond our comprehension. See more Read all reviews
