What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though hampered by an uneven second half, Stephen King's It supplies a wealth of funhouse thrills and an indelible turn from Tim Curry as Pennywise.

"It" is unmitigated, unrelenting, unrepenting boredom. Go to Full Review

Probably the best adaptation since Salem's Lot. Go to Full Review

Not only is the violence and gore more implied than shown, you always seem to know when it is coming and are rather prepared for it. There is little of that what-is-going-to-happen-next-I-can't-look feeling. Go to Full Review

It is a frightening movie, filled with wonderfully horrifying special effects. Go to Full Review

When It sticks to the story about Pennywise preying on the town's children, the mini-series is engrossing. The actors have a rapport and their friendship is believable. Go to Full Review

The name stars are collectively effective but credit must also be given to the most capable group of young actors playing the seven as children. Go to Full Review

Taner B. @Tanmanhorrorfan 5d IT remains a memorable adaptation, largely thanks to Tim Curry’s outstanding performance as Pennywise. His portrayal is both unsettling and captivating, leaving a lasting impression that continues to define the character for many viewers. There’s a strong sense of nostalgia attached to the miniseries, especially for those who grew up watching it. The casting is solid across the board, with both the child and adult actors delivering performances that bring the story to life in a compelling way. While the final confrontation—particularly the spider form—doesn’t quite live up to the rest of the production, it ultimately doesn’t take away from the overall experience. My score- 7/10 See more Steven F. @SteveGotScored Mar 13 Such a classic horror masterpiece! See more Leprechaun K @LeprechaunKing Feb 19 The classic adaptation of Stephen King's IT. First half is excellent but second half sort of falls apart, especially with the finale. Curry's portrayal of Pennywise will always the best. See more Rowan C @RowanC3 Jan 4 This was the very first installment of Pennywise, and it's mediocre. It combines the stories of the kids and adults and how they defeat Pennywise. The main cast of kids included Bill Denbrough (Jonathan Brandis), Richie Tozier (Seth Green), Ben Hanscom (Brandon Crane), Eddie Kaspbrack (Adam Faraizl), Stanley Uris (Ben Heller), Mike Hanlon (Marlon Taylor), and Beverly Marsh (Emily Perkins). It told their story as kids very well, and they ended up defeating Pennywise by shooting him with silver ingots. Tim Curry does a good job playing Pennywise in this movie, and he really gives a disturbing performance. Sometimes the movie felt more like a comedy than a horror movie, but it was the 90's. The movie also switches to the adult cast, which includes the same characters, but different actors. Every actor did a great job in this movie, but it did not need to be over 3 hours. There were too many unnecessary talking scenes that didn't need to happen. Overall, I think they do way better in 2017. See more Jeepers C @RT12312147 Jan 3 This is the It series to watch. It is the scariest, has better acting and practical effects are better then the cgi they use in the newer remakes and series. The characters make you feel connected to them. This is the one thing the newer It movies lost. I just couldn't get connected to the characters like in this original og "It". This will always be my favorite. See more Chris S. @ChrIsMissing Dec 29 Better then IT Chapter 2 but worst then IT Chapter 1, BUT Tim Curry’s Pennywise looks more like a creep which is a bonus. See more Read all reviews
