In 1990 two people dressed as police officers steal 13 pieces from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. The job is one of the most successful art thefts in history, and none of the loot has been recovered. Among the 13 priceless works stolen is Vermeer's "The Concert," one of only 35 of the master's surviving works.

Critics Consensus

A real-life whodunit with colorful characters, especially art detective Harold Smith, this documentary is a fascinating peek into the world of art collecting.

Stolen is ultimately too lightweight and indecisive -- ironic, for a film ostensibly about people in thrall to an all-consuming passion. Go to Full Review Kenneth Baker San Francisco Chronicle Sep 1, 2006

Aug 6, 2011 not the most well-directed thing, but a really interesting story. especially if you like art. See more Nov 7, 2009 Was really expecting something great but I was just bored the entire time. The documentary just never went anywhere. See more Oct 1, 2009 Awesome little film! Full of great art and colorful people. See more Jun 7, 2009 This doc is not conclusive which is a little frustrating. It is interesting for some perfunctory art world drama and weirdos. See more May 10, 2009 Interesting but kinds slow moving. Wondering how Gardner got the money. See more Jan 16, 2009 I thought the doc as a whole was pretty amateurish and I was more fascinated by Harold Smith, the eye patch wearing and constantly changing face bandages art theft detective. Which is a shame since the story behind the documentary is so much more interesting. 01.16.09 11th Film of 2009 See more Read all reviews
