Like many underrecognized treasures, David Miller's Sudden Fear fits into and defies different genres, its convention-scrambling partly the result of the fact that the film looks both forward and back. Go to Full Review

Outside of two very short but fairly unpleasing sequences, there is not a shot in this film that isn’t necessary to its dramatic progression. Not a shot, either, that isn’t fascinating and doesn’t make us think it is a masterpiece of filmmaking. Go to Full Review

This forgotten woman-in-distress film noir stars Joan Crawford as a rich playwright and Jack Palance as the younger actor looking to marry and off her. Nice-looking but poorly plotted. Go to Full Review

the draw here is Crawford, and she delivers magnificently. If you can toss away any hints of "Mommie Dearest" (and I realize that is difficult), you might truly appreciate an actress who knows when to hold back and when to let loose. Go to Full Review

Jerod S @jeroduptown 1 day ago Joan Crawford falls for an actor that's too good to be true. And when she hears him conspiring with another lady to kill her for her inheritance, Joan's got to stay one step ahead of the plan. See more Debi M. @RT70254073 May 28, 2026 What a film! A must-see! See more Alec B @Alec97 May 19, 2026 Joan Crawford squares off against gigachad homme fatale Jack Palance and low class femme fatale Gloria Grahame. Some of the conventions of noir get turned on their head here in very fun ways, especially in making Crawford the hero. Also this is the very definition of a competently made thriller. Hollywood used churn these out consistently, now we're lucky to get something half as good every few years. See more Ted B. @Movieaddicted Mar 8, 2026 4.0 stars; Joan Crawford steals this '50s noir film, as she does in most of her films. What starts out as a simple romantic film slowly evolves into a dramatic, suspenseful thriller, in a Hitchcockian style. Jack Palance does an exceptional job opposite Ms. Crawford initially, in a romantic lead, and then evolves into his stereotyped villain role. The film starts slow, developing the romantic relationship, but speeds up as Ms. Crawford's character discovers the plot against her and plans her revenge, all leading to an exciting, although predictable, chase scene ending. See more John G @RT30749950 Sep 17, 2025 Joan Crawford is fantastic and Jack Palance is impressive in spinning a romance that develops from a high level of intensity to a tragic tale of deception. The suspense is naturally developed as the plot evolves. See more Bill B @RT01438538 Oct 10, 2024 Slow start but finds itself a satisfying, if a bit predictable, finale. I was most impressed with Palance, who plays his dual role convincingly from both sides. More of a suspense drama than traditional film noir. See more Read all reviews
