In early 20th-century Britain, the growing suffragette movement forever changes the life of working wife and mother Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan). Galvanized by political activist Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep), Watts joins a diverse group of women who fight for equality and the right to vote. Faced with increasing police action, Maud and her dedicated suffragettes must play a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse, risking their jobs, homes, family and lives for a just cause.

Critics Consensus

Suffragette dramatizes an important -- and still painfully relevant -- fact-based story with more than enough craft and sincerity to overcome its flaws.

A rousing, demonstrative tale, and Mulligan not only shows the right sort of ardour, but also adds a bit of subtlety.

It's not a new Hollywood approach, but it doesn't make it right. It just perpetuates the idea that white women represent all women. Period.

Confusing suffrage for suffering, 'Suffragette' is a political period piece with a conflated ego and very little sense of narrative purpose.

With Suffragette, screenwriter Abi Morgan managed to pen a movie about Britain’s working-class women that’s a far sight better than the dud she scripted about Britain’s upper-class harridan.

“Suffragette” dances in numerous shades of gray both in the actions of the women shown in the film and in the film’s opinion about them.

Lovingly crafted and performed. And relevant, relevant, revelant until equality is achieved (and long thereafter lest we forget).
