As a kid, all I wanted to do was make movies, and this always reminds me of making short films with my friends. I love that the kids are essentially making their own little Night of the Living Dead style movie. The acting is fantastic. Kyle Chandler especially stands out as a broken man trying to keep his family together. The kids are hilarious and feel authentic, from the sass to the shit talking between friends. The short film during the credits is also such a cute touch. I've been a massive Michael Giacchino fan since Lost, and man does he pull on the heartstrings here. The score is incredible and gets me in the feels every time. Then you have the alien, which adds another layer of mystery and thrills. Even though it isn't shown much, its presence is felt throughout the entire movie. I love everything about this movie. Abrams’ sci-fi coming of age picture Super 8 (2011) is a delightful throw back before Stranger Things ever endeared itself to audiences everywhere. Drawing inspiration from Richard Donner’s The Goonies, Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, as well as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Abrams finds himself directing his greatest film with Super 8. Set during the end of the hippie era going into the 1980’s synth world, Abrams harks back to an older America many have nostalgia for with detailed props, signs, music, clothes, slang, and buildings. Michael Giacchino’s score is rousing with inspired melodies to lift your spirits. He does not quite match John Williams’ iconic score for E.T. that Giacchino’s clearly going for, Super 8’s music is pretty enough to stir emotions. It's has old school thrills along with a good dose of Sci-Fi and a thread of an emotional story line that pulls at your heart strings. See more Kristen S @Rocketeer90 Jul 12 This is still one of my favorite movies. It has a wonderful mystery, danger, kids being hero’s and lots of heart. I am so bummed it never became popular because it’s so underrated. It also gave the creators of Stranger Things a lot of ideas because this movie is a lot like it.
