Jacob W @RT17896586 2 days ago This is a great thriller with an early Matt Damon proving at this early stage in his career what a tour du force he is This is a great movie See more Henry D @Henry_Domke Sep 8, 2026 So much to appreciate here. A remarkable group of beautiful young actors, all in their prime, gorgeous Italian locations, and excellent cinematography throughout. The jazz was a big plus for us, and the story was fun, stylish and full of good twists. Even knowing the basic plot from Purple Noon, this version still felt fresh and very entertaining. See more Julia T @RT23658066 Aug 5, 2026 I don't know what to say except that this movie was soo great. It's not a CH-type but a really well written story about a man who slowly goes insane by loosing reality. It's a movie about obsession and moral grey thinking and the actors did such an amazing job. I'm describing it so horribly please watch it even if this comment did not made you interested See more Mark B @Burrellius Aug 5, 2026 Watched this many years ago and streamed it at home again recently. It is an excellent stylish film with top acting, fabulous locations and an intriguing plot that kept me engaged right up to the last moment, and beyond. Cracking movie. See more James A @Droz27 Jul 30, 2026 Top ten all time thriller, such a beautiful film crafted perfectly in every way. Young Jude Law is effortless and almost as gorgeous as his Italian clothes, you truly want to BE him. This is by far Matt Damon's best role, he nails it. Gwyneth is so subtle as she gradually suspects him, and the twist with the Private Detective sets up a poetic if unsatisfying ending. The style and cinematography are iconic, the characters real and believable, the script keeps you guessing and you find yourself rooting for the villain. It says so much about humanity, relationships and envy, I adore it. See more Katie D @novagirl11kd Jun 30, 2026 I watched this on the plane back from Italy, and I have mixed feelings. The whole thing felt strangely unhinged in a way that other villain-driven movies don't, and I never really understood Ripley's motive, which made it hard to get invested. The backstories of the various characters were also confusing to keep straight. That said, I went in expecting more of a whodunit, something twisty and surprising, and it just wasn't. The tension was there, but the "watch him get away with it" structure wasn't what I was hoping for – then again I don't usually watch thrillers. The standout for me was actually Jack Davenport, who plays Peter Smith-Kingsley. I recognized him from Pirates of the Caribbean, The Wedding Date, and Smash. He was the most compelling person on screen, and I'd love to see him in more things! Not a movie I'd watch again or recommend broadly unless you're a fan of the source material or psychological thrillers generally. See more Read all reviews
