Suffering from insomnia, disturbed loner Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) takes a job as a New York City cabbie, haunting the streets nightly, growing increasingly detached from reality as he dreams of cleaning up the filthy city. When Travis meets pretty campaign worker Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), he becomes obsessed with the idea of saving the world, first plotting to assassinate a presidential candidate, then directing his attentions toward rescuing 12-year-old prostitute Iris (Jodie Foster).

A great character study/story. A mental health story. A cautionary tale. A good one if you like DeNiro. Bernard Herrnann's final score sadly- full of emotion. So glad it was back on the big screen!

An unexpected flop. I feel as though I lost valuable time by choosing this film and not a different classic. As acclaimed as Scorsese may be, he dragged on this film almost selfishly... stringing along the viewer through Travis' anger-fuelled trials and tribulations, most of which were repetitive and surface-level. The problem with this film is that it's told from Travis' (De Niro's) point-of-view, so we as the viewers don't enjoy a break from his muddled and underdeveloped state of mind. If instead the point of view had been shared with Betsy, perhaps Scorsese would have been better redeemed. Instead, we are left with a superficial and narrow perspective on the world. Sure, New York can be dark and disturbing, but this fixation comes at the cost of Travis' character development. Because we are in Travis' head throughout the film, we're also left with a disappointing ending: too muddled and underdeveloped. Bonus points for cinematography & realistic depiction of NYC's seedy underbelly.

It is a magnificent, highly philosophical film that explores psychological transformation, autism, and loneliness. It is truly brilliant, featuring a remarkably distinctive sense of mystery; although I have some reservations about the ending, I became deeply attached to the film. My rating is 9.5/10 or 4.75/5 (to clarify).

Amazing. Just amazing. Amazing story, acting, plot, it was spectacular. Characters were made so well, and Robert De Niro did amazing. This is a MUST watch movie. It was really really good.
