While the screenplay clearly stumbles, especially with its time travel storyline to feudal Japan, the film never completely loses its identity. The concept itself is creative, but the execution feels rushed and underdeveloped, leaving several ideas unexplored. Where the film succeeds is in its commitment to practical effects. The Turtle suits, though slightly downgraded from earlier films, still provide a tangible authenticity that modern CGI versions struggle to replicate. Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael still feel like real characters rather than digital creations, which gives the movie warmth and personality. The pacing issues, weaker villains, and uneven tone are more noticeable with age, but the humor remains effective. It stands as a flawed but memorable piece of franchise history. It still matters. See more Joey H. @Joeyhubb1989 Aug 11 Released on March 19th, 1993, this was not only the last live action TMNT film of the 1990s but would also be the last live action TMNT film to hit the silver screen for the next two decades. Directed by Stuart Gillard and with a score composed once again by John Du Prez, this film takes the Heroes in a Half-Shell on a time traveling journey to 17th Century Feudal Japan, 1603, where they have to rescue their good friend April O’Neil who was accidentally sent there by an ancient magical scepter and must also help save a village that is under siege by doing battle with an evil emperor/daimyo known as Lord Norinaga and his cannon and gun toting English henchman named Walker. Unlike the previous two films, the All Effects Company would take over creating the suits and animatronics for the Turtles and Splinter from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. Returning actors from the previous films are Paige Turco reprising her role as April O’Neil; Elias Koteas as Casey Jones, who also plays a dual role as an Englishman named Whit in ancient Japan; and also returning are Brian Tochi, Robbie Rist and Corey Feldman as the respective voices of Leonardo, Michelangelo and Donatello, with Tim Kelleher providing the voice of Raphael and James Murray as the voice and performer of Master Splinter. Joining the cast for this film are Sab Shimono as Lord Norinaga, Vivian Wu as the female warrior and village leader Mitsu, and Stuart Wilson as Walker. Many fans have gone on to consider this film as the weakest link in TMNT film lore. Filmed on a budget of $21 million dollars, it would ultimately end up grossing only $54.4 million, the lowest grossing entry in the 1990s trilogy. While the film itself wasn’t a great success, the idea of the Turtles traveling through time to ancient Japan would go on to become a recurring storyline in future TMNT series and other Turtle lore. This was the only entry I personally got to see in theaters as a child and while I do not hate it by any means, it definitely leaves something to be desired. I’d give it a 3.5 rating out of ten.
