Critics Consensus

The Dark and the Wicked delivers on its title with an unsettling horror story whose deep dread and bleak outlook further compound its effective jolts.

Steady interlacing of generational resentment with supernatural menace-each feeding, zombie-like, off the other-gives The Dark and the Wicked a subtext that's almost strong enough to offset its largely generic scares.

There is possibly not a single scary moment here that will be new to horror fans, but Bertino directs with such technical flair that I yelped at most of them - and half-missed the others, eyes squeezed tight shut.

The Dark and the Wicked is a relentless ride through the stages of grief and guilt.

The atmosphere Bertino creates in his near-singular location-set movie is dripping with dread; he films most scenes in such naturally dull light that it makes the outside world seem much further than a pull of a curtain away.

The imagery is disturbing. The scares are not always easy to feel coming, and there are a few scenes that made me distinctly uncomfortable.

What Bertino ultimately delivers is a time capsular movie with an enduring, if not routine, story.

This was absolutely a hidden gem for horror movies. It had me on the edge of my seat the entire movie. I havent seen a great horror picture like this in a while.

Evil, despair, shadow. Ugh. Scary film in a deeply wicked way. Not your run of the mill horror film. Wow impressive.

Wenn man gut die Hälfte herauskürzen würde, wäre es vermutlich ein guter und spannender Mystery-Horror-Film. Aber leider zieht er sich unglaublich...

This is by far one of the worst horror movies I've ever seen in my entire life so much so that I actually made an account on this website to try to save someone the hour and a half that I've wasted on this horrible film I have no idea how it got such high reviews my only suspicion is that someone must have paid a lot of money for these people to sit through this horrible slop of a movie please if you are reading this do not waste an hour and a half on this abysmal film The best description of this film is having a sneeze that honestly never comes... Absolutely disappointing
