Chris S @Janomi Jul 19 The Expendables 3 has its moments, especially when the new additions bring fresh energy. Harrison Ford fits surprisingly well into this world, giving the movie a different veteran presence after Bruce Willis’ exit. Mel Gibson is even stronger as Stonebanks, bringing bitterness, instability, and a personal history with Barney that makes him one of the franchise’s better villains. Antonio Banderas is also a lot of fun as Galgo. His nonstop talking and desperate need to join the team could have been annoying, but he gives the movie a badly needed burst of comic personality. The final battle has scale, with old and new teams, tanks, helicopters, explosions, and waves of enemies creating the action-toy-box feel the series wants. The problem is that the PG-13 rating waters down the impact, and the younger team is not memorable enough to justify taking time away from the older cast. The movie has things to appreciate, but it feels overstuffed and diluted. Start to finish since it’s Theater release. I’m not a Hollywood expert, but when you have a successful trilogy or franchise within a film, you don’t go from a consistent R rating to PG-13.
