While Bogart and Bacall would have demanded a sharper script, The Gentleman Thief has the bones of an old-fashioned heist.

I find it very interesting that Travolta is doing this series, (decent paycheck). This is the third time he's portrayed the title thief Mason, and they teased another one at the end. Lotsa unintended hilarity including JT wearing a Seinfeld Pirate Shirt.

Despite the slick yet dull film craft that all but drowns a well-known cast, Travolta maintains a formidable presence.

Flickering Myth

The Gentleman Thief has the cars, the clothes and the sparkling Miami water, but not the sleight of hand required to turn those luxuries into cinema. It looks like money. It rarely feels like fun.

As required by the genre, the script is full of twists and turns leading to an explosive finale. None of this is very clever, but it's an entertaining way to kill some time.

An often anemic crime thriller that's low on thrills, suspense and intrigue. Travolta gives a bland performance that's not even remotely as lively as his performances Broken Arrow, Face/Off or even Swordfish.

If you haven't seen it yet — don't. That should be the title of every review of this mishmash of random shots this movie is packed with. The movie is as predictable as having an omelet for breakfast. Anyone familiar with the genre could watch the whole thing in 20–30 minutes. Fast-forwarding is what you'll be doing instead of munching on popcorn. This is one of those rare movies where you won't even have time to finish your snacks. No creativity, no finesse. It's honestly surprising that Travolta even signed a contract for this. The acting is weak, and I've seen better shootouts between two 13-year-olds playing Call of Duty. A complete disaster.

The Gentleman Thief has all the basic ingredients for what should be a fun heist movie: a veteran thief, expensive paintings, betrayal, and John Travolta. Unfortunately, those ingredients are put together like a project that just wants to be done as quickly as possible. Travolta still has the charisma, but the script is way too generic to give him anything genuinely interesting to work with. The plot twists arrive with a very "well, of course that’s what happens" energy, while the supporting characters feel more like plot devices than actual people. At 97 minutes, the movie is already pretty short, yet the pacing still feels weird. It rarely builds any real tension, and by the time it finally tries to get clever, we’re already several steps ahead of it. The most frustrating part is that the movie had the potential to be a light, entertaining crime thriller, but it ends up feeling too flat and formulaic. The Gentleman Thief isn’t a complete disaster.
