Critics Consensus

Emily Blunt's outstanding performance isn't enough to keep The Girl on the Train from sliding sluggishly into exploitative melodrama.

If not for Blunt's fantastic performance, the film would have come across as a quickie capitalizing on the novel's popularity. As far as thrillers go,Girl on the Train works hard to make every player seem suspicious but the result isn't as juicy...

Though never devolving into the levels of camp, The Girl on the Train presents itself as Gone Girl's trashier, but funner sister.

Soapy psychosexual thriller ‘The Girl on the Train’ applies Emily Blunt’s tremendous talents to tell a fairly rote murder mystery melodrama.

Blunt does her best to elevate the material, but dividing the film's focus between three different women (and all of their men) means no one has an opportunity to develop a fully formed character.

Apart from the film's acting, fans of the source material should ignore the adaptation and preserve their imagination's picture of Hawkins' novel.

Maybe a bit all over the place to fully enjoy and grasp, but it makes up for it with incredible performances and a good mystery

I nodded off and rewound several times to try and keep up. I'd suggest reading the review first (not my norm) so you have an idea what to look for. I still have the dvd checked-out so may give it another chance tomorrow; I could tell that there was a good story there if you can connect the dots.

Heard good things about this film. Once you get past the slow pace at the beginning and it starts to pick up, it becomes a really good film with plenty of twists. Great cast, Emily Blunt is fantastic, and I love Rebecca Ferguson.

Emily Blunt’s performance is stunning! This is not only a character study but a commentary on women’s solidarity. If the main character was a man and violence to obtain oil or money was the focus it would have been embraced better by audiences. The main character is a woman and the life and death quest is for love and family. I wanted to know if she would get off and each character had a serious dark side to them. It would have been a five if there was more nuance to the male characters. They were varying shades of misogyny, mendacity, and manipulation. This is a movie worth viewing and talking about out.
