Richard L @KaneLives 7h The Hallow starts off great, with a gorgeous location, lots of local legends to work with, quality acting, and some wonderful creature work. However, the film feels rudderless for most of its runtime - it's clearly building up to something, but even when the 'something' arrives it lacks any kind of catharsis, nor does it add any new energy or tension. For once, I'm at a loss on whether to blame the script or the direction - it's not like The Hallow is cliché per se, but 'unexciting' it certainly is. See more Gabriel S @Sanarel 4d Corin Hardy's first full-length entry into horror, this before The Nun in The Conjuring universe, tried hard to deliver a hit folk-horror story but it flops mainly because of the characters and the weird pacing. The story basically flows too fast, over the course of pretty much one full day, and a lot of the beats feel forced into the storyline, mainly to keep the day flowing. We miss the slow rhythm that good folk horrors deliver, and the lack of lore also makes The Hallow underperform. The nice things about this flick is that it is original for what it is and, true to horror, punchy without small-talk. Slow burn with lots of lore building and background, suspenseful with a kick at the end. Good tongue numbing moments, with some genuine scares.
