What to Know

Critics Consensus

High on quirky smarts and low on splashy special effects, The History of Future Folk is an unusual -- and unusually fun -- slice of sci-fi.

A delightful sci-fi adventure that simultaneously strips the genre down to its low-tech basics and infuses it with audacious new verve. Go to Full Review Bill Goodykoontz Arizona Republic Jul 25, 2013

It is so charming and sweet ... and the songs are so winning that it is impossible not to fall for it. Go to Full Review Tom Keogh Seattle Times Jul 11, 2013

The nonsense proves good, goofy fun that works well because "History" at least acts as if it takes itself seriously, going easy on obvious ironies while dishing out catchy tunes. Go to Full Review Kip Mooney College Movie Review Sep 18, 2021

Not very good, but earns a lot of points for its earnestness, music and charm. Go to Full Review Lainna Fader ScreenAnarchy Jun 5, 2020
The History of Future Folk is a sweet and charming little story that seems destined to become a cult favorite. Go to Full Review Sarah Ward Trespass Dec 4, 2018
Though competently performed and brimming with enthusiasm, the sweet but slight fable-based film that results is heavily reliant upon its idea and less cognisant of its wavering cinematic execution, however it does provide moments of heartfelt comedy. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Eddie D @Topoftiger Dec 13, 2022 Just wonderful. More heart than movies with 100 times greater budgets. Both main characters will pull you in along with the rest of the small cast. A real gem. Watch it before it leaves Netscape. See more ellen j @RT31546146 Mar 24, 2022 **Mild spoilers.** The best part of this movie was the music. Low, low, LOW budget film, with toothless humor and cheap, ungainly costumes. The two male leads had only to stare into the eyes of the women folk and say a few pretty words and all was forgiven–lying, cheating, assault, and kidnapping. Boys will be boys. The female lead had all the personality of a dish towel, but hey, she's beautiful so of course she's worthy whereas the old bat in the dance studio could be knocked unconscious without another thought. Sexism, ageism, and plot holes galore. See more Liam M @liammc2006 Mar 15, 2022 This is a really fun movie, super unworthy of it's TV-14 rating. This makes a great family movie! highly recommend this to all audiences. Love that acoustic stuff and that banjo, and Mighty Kevin has a lovely, strong, melodious tenor. See more Mar 22, 2021 A quirky movie with catchy tunes, fusing an overall light-hearted sci-fi family story with some more depressing or even creepy vibes. See more Read all reviews
