At the height of the Cold War, a mysterious criminal organization plans to use nuclear weapons and technology to upset the fragile balance of power between the United States and Soviet Union. CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and KGB agent Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) are forced to put aside their hostilities and work together to stop the evildoers in their tracks. The duo's only lead is the daughter of a missing German scientist, whom they must find soon to prevent a global catastrophe.

There's no secret underground HQ, no inverted triangular ID badges. Henry Cavill tries desperately hard to sound like Robert Vaughn, and looks nothing like him. Oh, did I mention there's no SECRET UNDERGROUND HQ! To top it all, they did away with Jerry Goldsmith's iconic theme tune. If you're too young to recall the original, you can sit back and enjoy this version, but seriously, Guy Ritchie should have removed any mention of the acronym "U.N.C.L.E." and called it something else. The costumes, music, cars, production design, split screens, and European locations give the movie a sharp flavor, and Guy Ritchie keeps it slick without making it feel too serious. Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer work really well as mismatched rivals. Napoleon Solo is smooth, polished, and smug, while Illya Kuryakin is intense, impatient, and always close to losing his temper. Their constant competition gives the film a fun buddy-spy rhythm. Alicia Vikander brings charm and intelligence to Gaby, making her more than just the woman caught between the two leads. The action is stylish, the pacing is breezy, and the dry humor fits the Cold War setting. The main weakness is that Victoria Vinciguerra looks the part but does not leave a huge impression as the villain. Still, this is a very entertaining, well-executed spy comedy with a great sense of style.
