Critics Consensus

Suitably grand and special effects-laden, The Wolfman suffers from a suspense-deficient script and a surprising lack of genuine chills.

Sure, it's more sinister and gory (ridiculously so at times), but Del Toro's acting is a standout. Go to Full Review

As for the epic battle pitting werewolf versus werewolf -- let’s just say it couldn’t be any less frightening had the filmmakers elected to pit Pekingese against Poodle. Go to Full Review

…better than a dire reputation suggests; it’s clearly a loving attempt to revise a classic story, with top talent all on message, and a few neat moments for genre fans to enjoy, even if the final wolf-on-wolf fight is risible… Go to Full Review

Where the film suffers is its lack of involvement in the crucial levels of emotion and suspense, the driving forces of the original film. Had those essential elements of the story been developed further, this would be an effortless recommendation. Go to Full Review

Xexla M @CriticalMahogany 2 days ago The Wolfman (2010) I watched the unrated director’s cut rather than the theatrical release, and as a lifelong werewolf enthusiast, I went in with high expectations. Thankfully, this remake of Universal’s iconic monster film delivers a worthy addition to the genre. One standout moment is the sequence where Lawrence stands surrounded by men just before transforming. With a little more time devoted to building tension, it could have been a masterclass in horror. Anthony Hopkins is phenomenal, while Benicio del Toro and Emily Blunt deliver equally compelling performances. The story takes some welcome liberties with its source material, and although it leans more toward action than traditional horror, it works. The practical effects are excellent, though some CGI is noticeably weaker. The climax delivers, even if the emotional storytelling falls a little short. Ultimately, I came for a werewolf, some bloody action, and a good time. I got exactly that. See more Ed B @EdLee 2 days ago The Wolfman (2010) is adaptation I really enjoyed. Storyline was great. Cinematography, directing and sets all set a chilling tone for this familiar tale of Lawrence Talbot and his affliction. Top notch acting too. Wish the reboot of classic monsters could all be this good. See more Matthew D @OceanSage Oct 25, 2026 Horror and cruelty. Joe Johnston's The Wolfman (2010) is a horror thriller that captures the despair and helplessness that comes along with lycanthropy. The werewolf make-up is amazing with his hairy and frightening practical effects. Benicio del Toro is remarkable as the doomed protagonist. His depression and uncertainty are apparent with del Toro's strong performance. Sir Anthony Hopkins is terrifying as usual with his deadly presence and intimidating stature. Hopkins uses his growl like voice alongside his stocky frame works to unnerve you every scene. Emily Blunt is lovely and endearing as the tragically fated love of del Toro. Hugo Weaving is very charming and funny as the detective hunting down the werewolf. All the acting in The Wolfman is top notch. Johnston's direction is interesting. He captures natural reactions next to his scary horror sequences and action moments. Danny Elfman's eerie score complements Johnston's steadfast direction beautifully.
