See more Steven C @Shrimpsalad4eva Dec 16 This movie was extremely enjoyable! I’ve been A huge Lord of the Rings fan since I was a wee little lad and this movie fully transported me into the story. I loved the chemistry between Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins, they were terrific in their roles. I really enjoyed the WW1 trench scenes with Tolkien visualizing the Nazgûl cutting down soldiers. It was an all around great movie, well written, well acted, great cinematography and I would highly recommend it. See more Uber S Jul 9 anyone who gives this film a horrible rating obviously is not a Tolkien fan on any level. this was one of the most beautiful films i've seen in a LONG time. people claim it didnt show his inspirations, when it did in fact do so. the zone between trenches were the Dead Marshes, he literally had a faithful follower in WWI named Sam, it displayed the love between a man destined for greatness and a beautiful woman whom others did not want said relationship to happen. the relation between a religious figure and tolkien (Lord Elrond and Aragorn). it showed the bright star which tolkien looked upon while in the war, the light of elendil, the elves' most beloved star. the ONLY critique i would give it would be when they showed tolkien discovering his mother who had passed. the emotion of the moment could have been portrayed better. otherwise, this film was beautiful in so many aspects! The characters lack depth—I didn’t sense any real grief in Tolkien when he learns of Geoffrey’s death. Nicholas Hoult does what he can, but he’s constrained by a script that portrays Tolkien as a flawless, tragic genius, rather than a complex human being. If you’re looking for a more compelling and nuanced biography, I strongly recommend the graphic novel "Tolkien: Lighting Up the Darkness". See more Lincoln C @lincoln681 May 5 bad. Not a very good representation of Tolkien and his works. It never really focused on Tolkien and his philosophy. or even his inspirations. This movie is bad. basic in every sense of the word. A non fiction version of lord of the rings that does not understand what made it good. Not of it leads up to the conclusion where he writes the hobbit. And even then I think it would've been better if it was less of a romance drama and more about his actual works. bad. 1/10.
