Alain E @AlainE Jan 29 This is some kind of allegory, that after watching the first twenty minutes failed to win me. The time is contemporary based on the vehicles we see. The conditions remind WW II. It is totally uncertain who are the good guys and who the bad. French, Germans or aliens from Galaxy 3Ba. In summary: not interested. See more wkbrannigan B @LumpenIntelligensia Jan 24 An excellent work showing humanity always trapped near the gates of Hell - the ever present possibility of a turn towards anarchy and continental scale destruction. There is a scene in the movie looking down a long external stairs to the harbour, and it is meant to suggest the descent into Hell of Dante's inferno. All the souls waiting for the ship are Dante's souls waiting for transport. A profound movie on many levels. See more David F @dfulmer 01/07/2025 While this film did have a unique atmosphere of civilizational collapse encroaching on desperate refugees in the south of France, good acting, and a plot that managed it’s twists appropriately, the tactic of setting a WWII era story in the seeming present didn’t really do the film any favours. It is risky for its setting, modern and recognizable compared to a bygone era and, unfortunately, still recognizable, which makes it go even further than its love story. It is led by a formidable and overwhelmingly handsome Franz Rogowski who, alongside an enigmatic Paula Beer, defies all expectations and takes the viewer into an emotional and political journey that, in the end, leaves a inexplicably sublime taste.
