With her marriage breaking up, Beverly Hills housewife Phyllis Nefler boosts her self-esteem by leading a local troop of Wilderness Girls. Although Phyllis' version of roughing it is spending the night at the Beverly Hills Hotel, that suits her privileged troop members just fine. Unfortunately, when Phyllis falls afoul of a rival leader, the girls are threatened with having their group dissolved -- unless they can prove their wilderness skills at the annual jamboree.

Critics Consensus

Troop Beverly Hills is hamstrung by a one-joke premise, leaving this Shelley Long comedy woefully short on laughs.

"Troop Beverly Hills" is based on the real experiences of its producer Ava Fries, but it doesn't pay the kind of detailed attention to the Beverly Hills girls Fries must have known to make the movie work.

For about a half-hour, "Troop Beverly Hills" brings a lot of funny situations and funny lines. Then it's time to finish the popcorn and settle down for a nap.

Screenwriters Pamela Norris and Margaret Grieco Oberman hail from the mid-1980s period of Saturday Night Live, if that gives an idea of what to expect in the way of a script.

Long strives coyly and cutely to become a Lucille Ball of the opulent '80s. But despite her winsome presence, "Troop Beverly Hills" proves an uphill, downhill trek.

Even relieved by the occasional witty line, delivered impeccably by Long, the thing is still an empty, old-fashioned, worn-out rag of a situation comedy.

Troop Beverly Hills relies on contrived situations and caricatures for its humor.

Good laughs; cute; warm; wild & wonderful outfits, and this come from a guy who wears old blue jeans, suspenders, and whatever shirt is on top of the pile, until my wife trashes it or shuffles the deck. Delightfully predictable. Don’t walk across a log; crawl; unless you are making a movie and have CGI.

I don’t know where all the hate is coming from. Movie "critics" can be so snobby. lol. This movie is not that serious and isn’t supposed to be. I loved it as a kid and have watched it many times since. I’m watching it right now. This isn’t some sort of Oscar winning movie but still great and a cult classic nonetheless!

Amazing, yes, it is corny and cheesy. What do you expect? That makes it great— fun, predictable, magical, and funny. I love it as a classic.

I don't know what all the hate is about, it's a children's movie. I enjoyed it as a child and I am now in my 30s and it randomly popped up on YouTube free to watch so I watched the entire movie and loved it again.
