Critics Consensus

Playing armchair psychologist to one of America's most infamous killers, Unabomber's fine acting can't compensate for an unconvincing thesis.

It offers little insight and duller still are its ’90s-set scenes, featuring a robotic Shailene Woodley as a CIA agent. Go to Full Review

All this biopic material about the corruption of Kaczynski’s high IQ is drab and lazy: it simply recycles A Beautiful Mind and assumes, job done. Go to Full Review

Math prodigy and domestic terrorist Ted Kaczynski has had his fair share of media attention since the '90s (and prior to that as the anonymous "Unabomber"), but according to Netflix, it hasn't been enough. Go to Full Review

Sadly, Unabomber is not great. In fact, its greatest accomplishment is how it takes such great talent and such a potentially textured subject and creates such an unbelievably dull, misguided and lifeless result. Go to Full Review

Madalina M @RT08771295 23 hrs ago The ultimate irony of Unabomber is that in trying to condemn the "immoral" actions of psychology in the 1960s, the filmmakers committed a contemporary moral error. They fabricated a false reality, manipulated history, and smeared a scientific discipline - the very definition of propaganda - just to sell theater tickets. There's an important ethical problem is fictionalizing a real deceased person to make them look directly responsible for creating a mass murderer. Because Murray is no longer alive to defend his reputation, the film takes immense liberties, creating a moral vacuum where a real scientist's lifetime of work is reduced to a caricatured villain origin story.
