Critics Consensus

Despite the best efforts of its competent cast, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is an indistinguishable and unnecessary prequel.

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is as unnecessary as it is uninvolving. Only fans desperate to learn how the whole vampire-werewolf conflict began are likely to get anything out of this viewing experience. Go to Full Review

Matthew D @OceanSage 5 hrs ago Michael Sheen leads a werewolf rebellion. Patrick Tatopoulos’ Gothic horror thriller Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009) is always enthralling to revisit. Tatopoulos went from Underworld’s production designer to the director of this third film in the vampire and werewolf saga. Michael Sheen steals the show as the empathetic werewolf slave turned lycan leader and freedom fighter Lucian. He was scary in Underworld, but here he is compassionate and commanding. Rhona Mitra is outstandingly cool, sexy, confident, fierce, and loving as Sonja the vampire. She portrays Sonja with such warmth for a cold blooded vampire. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans hinges on if you believe her love for Lucian, and Mitra pulls off Sonja’s emotions with ease. This is her best film by far. Billy Nighy is fantastic as he cruelly weighs his decisions and spits out lines of dialogue with a pithy venom. Nighy’s vampire lord Viktor is as fearsome and intimidating as he was in Underworld. See more Nathan J @TribianiRamoray Sep 19, 2026 Rated: 6.2/10 ⭐️ I wanted to see where the vampire-werewolf beef started. I like this; it’s a gritty origin story giving the werewolves tragic depth. What Worked: • Sheen goes all in as Lucian with a raw energy I totally dug. • Nighy is delightfully arrogant as Viktor, a villain you love to hate. • Seeing the actual origin of the war gave the franchise emotional weight. The Friction: • Not having Beckinsale front and center felt weird to me. • The heavy blue-gray filter washed out visuals and muddied the fights. • The romance between Lucian and Sonja felt kinda rushed. Verdict: I like this. Watch for a gritty backstory. Skip if blue-tinted visuals annoy you. See more Claudio C @Claudio666 Sep 19, 2026 One of the Best Trilogies Ever (12,700– 18 Aug 2009 / 27 Jan 2011 / 18 Sep 2026 – Claudio Carvalho) I usually do not like prequels and sequels of successful movies, but "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" is an excellent prequel of one of the best trilogies I have ever seen, and maybe the best of the three great movies. The tragic romance between Sonja and Lucian has elements of Romeo and Juliet and is engaging, providing a great justification to the beginning of the feud between vampires and Lycans. The cinematography is wonderful, giving stylish support to the outstanding screenplay. The gorgeous Rhona Mitra resembles Kate Beckinsale that makes a cameo in the very last scene and shows a great chemistry with Michael Sheen. My vote is eight. It has a good mix of action, drama, and a strong story about Lucian and Sonja. The fight scenes were exciting, and it was interesting to see how the war between the vampires and Lycans started. If you like fantasy and action movies, I think it's definitely worth watching. See more Lincoln L @Linkolnbio2 Jun 7, 2026 Great Isekai prelude See more Read all reviews
