Some segments are solid, a few descent scares, but it's the plot that suffers. It can be fun, but yeah the later movies are much better, but as a quick horror watch, it isn't bad!!! The anthology concept is strong and a few segments genuinely work, especially when the found-footage format creates uncertainty about what is hiding inside the frame. Unfortunately, the quality varies far too much. Several stories begin with promising ideas but go nowhere, the framing narrative is one of the weakest parts, and the film becomes exhausting long before it becomes frightening. There is plenty of sex, blood and provocation, but shock eventually loses its effect when the underlying tension is not strong enough. I understand the film’s importance within early-2010s independent horror and its role in reviving both anthology horror and found footage, but watching it now, only a few tapes really stand out. The acting swings between "convincing panic" and "did they just read this line for the first time?", and the CGI (when it shows up) looks like it was rendered on a toaster from 2008. The real villain though is the camera work—constant shaky, dizzying, nausea-inducing chaos that turns every segment into a headache simulator. It tries to be gritty and found-footage scary, but mostly ends up feeling like your TV is having a meltdown while people scream in the background. See more Read all reviews
