Critics Consensus

Providing Alan Ritchson an ideal vehicle to flex his brawny charisma, War Machine occasionally clanks when it comes to character depth but otherwise soldiers on to deliver an awesome dose of action spectacle.

It's a science-fiction survival film – the Ranger candidates are carrying blanks – with trace elements of Transformers, Battleship, and Spielberg's War of the Worlds. Somewhat derivative, but modestly enjoyable. Go to Full Review
Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter Mar 9
The film’s R rating is well-deserved thanks to the profusion of burnt and dismembered bodies on view in the alien machine’s wake. Unfortunately, the screenplay by Hughes and co-writer James Beaufort leaves much to be desired. Go to Full Review

It makes for a slicker-than-usual streaming premiere, an easy, drink-your-way-through-it Friday night option for those who wish to remain entirely unchallenged. Go to Full Review

War Machine is spoiled by a severe lack of tension and while literally everyone is on the table for the slaughter, the kills by this extraterrestrial lifeform become repetitive before it even begins… Go to Full Review
James Croot The Post NZ May 5
While thankfully this is no Battlefield Earth, Battle: Los Angeles or Battleship, War Machine doesn’t really offer up many surprising beats as a fairly predictable scenario plays out. Go to Full Review

War Machine is one of the most agonizingly boring films in recent memories, reveling in its garden-variety elements while failing to take advantage of what little novelty it does possess. Go to Full Review

Rodane T @RT45816326 1d I enjoyed it. Don't get people who watch movies like these and expect a fucking masterpiece. You know what you're gonna get eat before you watch the movie. Some boring parts but overall the action and gore overshadows it. Watch it if you want and stop listening to people who don't know how movies work or just wanna sound smart. See more Benjamin G @BxDxGx 2d Had a great time watching it, they keep it fun and entertaining with enough depth to make it inspiring, nothing too crazy or outside the norm. I like the sci-fi aspect that promotes a more all of us nations are in this together global vibe. It has enough recruitment messaging in there to annoy but I try to look past that and appreciate the moral code. Ritchson definitely has that look that a lot guys want but in reality there isn’t too many out there that can rep like that. Always thought it’d be something else to be part of a special ops team like SWAT or SEAL Team 6. I’d give it a solid 3.75 out of 5 for being true to what it is going for, it’s no "1917" or "Saving Private Ryan" or even "Black Hawk Down" but I enjoyed it, it’s polished and straightforward entertainment. See more Sean R @RT99069801 3d Great movie if you’re too stupid to spot blatant military recruitment propaganda. Here’s a hint…you’re going to be the dead ass brother. See more Rick J @RT13897715 6d Found it a movie to fast forward to where the fun begins ie. the war machine interactions. Tried hard to recreate Predator, even using the music and such. The sappy emotional flashbacks really detracted from any momentum the movie was trying to create. Definitely lacked the whit and one liners Predator/Terminator/Transformers had. See more Melchizedek Franz Noval S @Melchizedek Aug 26 Despite it's mixed reviews, War Machine was a blast for me. It’s a big, loud, ridiculous sci-fi action movie that knows exactly what kind of ride it wants to be. Alan Ritchson is perfectly cast as the intimidating but surprisingly vulnerable lead, and once the giant alien killing machine enters the picture, the movie really kicks into gear. The story may not be the most original, and some of the military-drama elements feel familiar, but the action more than makes up for it. The practical stunts, brutal set pieces, impressive effects, and relentless pacing kept me entertained from beginning to end. I understand why critics were divided, particularly regarding the predictable writing and more prominent military themes. Personally, however, I found the film thoroughly enjoyable. It is precisely the kind of extravagant action movie that allows viewers to sit back, suspend their disbelief, and enjoy the spectacle. See more Azerbaijani W @Azerbaijani2007 Aug 25 A movie that is action-packed, melancholic and perfectly paced; all 3 at the same time. Alan Ritchson is the most underrated actor walking on earth. The plot in this movie was very well written. It's basically a more modern version of Predator (1987). See more Read all reviews
