Dominic B @RT83360345 1d Watching this movie I didn't know if I should laugh or cry. Cry because it's grounded in truth: The US got into Afghanistan because of the Taliban's support for Al-Qaida. And then they got badly stuck in an ever-growing mess. And messes need to be paid for, and normally by the little guy (i.e. Afghan civilians and American grunts). This movie is merciless depicting the venality and supidity behind the Afghan invasion, and the totally f*cked up withdrawal is not even included. Brad Pitt hams it up (not very convincing, but funny) depicting the well-meaning but completely delusional General sent to Afhanistan to clean up. Ben Kingsley is hilarious portraying Karzai (I wonder if he got to see the movie - hope not). I may have caught it on a bad day, but the film still struggled to hold my attention. Brad Pitt commits completely to his exaggerated general, yet the performance becomes part of a larger tonal problem: the movie is not funny enough to succeed as satire, not tense enough to work as a war film, and not emotionally involving enough to function as drama. Its central idea is interesting — trying to "win" a war whose political reality makes victory almost impossible to define — but meetings, narration and endless strategic discussion drain the story of momentum. There are stronger moments when the film finally focuses on the real consequences of military decisions, but they arrive too late. Well made, well cast and surprisingly dull. See more B K @maxmad Jun 25 Not what I expected. A comedy it is not. It is a commentary on US political and armed forces intervention. The idea that the bigger the gun, the more likely a successful outcome .... not. I enjoyed Pitt's acting and character. In fact, it is the Brad Pitt show and while it is over-the-top, one cannot help feeling that it is sadly nearer reality than one would like to believe. Nothing that happens appears to be far-fetched, given what we already know about US counterinsurgency activities since the 1960's. Four stars .... not for the screenplay, but because it makes one think about the madness. It's too bad it starred Dennis Quaid. His acting has gotten worse. It's not surprising the he's a MAGAT. Given that tRump is our commander in chief, I was rooting for the robot. Clichéd to death, gungho, send in the Rangers and throw in some macho deep emotion and explosions. Unbelievable, clap trap! However an excellent comedy on par with the exploits shown by the American military in the fantastic 'Team America' movie from years ago. I would rename it Space aliens v Jarheads or meatheads.
