See more Brent G May 20 I’d imagine the book this film is adapted from is a much more suitable medium for this story and probably very good, but this movie is awful. There’s a line in which Shailene Woodley’s character is narrating about her therapy sessions in which she describes her therapist (played by the amazing Angela Bassett) as an “actor acting as a therapist” and that she herself was acting along. That’s kind of how I felt about a majority of the characters in this film, they were less real and more-so actors acting like actors. It is really a bizarrely bad movie. I was not expecting the ending it delivered, but it left things 'up in the air' as it didn’t exactly clarify enough. See more 10/24/2024 it's Shailene Woodley's most mature and grownup role to date she plays a girl named Kat who's mother suddenly disappears and two years pass without any clue of what might have happened Greg Araki directs the film with a few familiar trademarks; the flashbacks and the dream sequences are beautiful Eva Greene as the strange and unusual mother is excellent along with the oblivious, clueless husband played by Chris Meloni it does have the 1980's time era in tact as well Kat is very much throughout a majority of the movie a 'white bird' trapped in a state of confusion trying to find her way out is it possible her mother left on her own or did something else happen that she's unaware of? the ending is quite nerve-wracking when the pieces come together it can be stressful and deadpan at times but Araki adapts the bestselling book into an emotional and flowing trip Still works after 10 years See more Read all reviews
