The foggy forest set is one of the best ever put on screen for a horror film. See more Kevin P @RT55971421 Oct 22 A very entertaining and intriguing classic monster movie that pioneered all the rules and tropes of the modern werewolf mythology (weakness to silver & wolfbane, nighttime transformations under the autumn moon, becoming a werewolf through a bite transmission, etc.). The lead actor is very charming and funny as Larry, who's more of a likable and sympathetic counterpart to someone like Dr Jekyll when it comes to his beastly transformations. You really feel for him when he's desperately trying to make sense of it all and warn everyone. The side characters are mostly decent. I liked the actors playing father and love interest. Bela Lugosi also plays a fun cameo as the gypsy fortune teller who becomes the unintentional catalyst for the horror show. The creature effects for the Wolfman are great, especially for the time. The foggy woods, intricate mansion, and old European village all make for a great setting. Like most Universal Monster Movies, the film can sometimes meander a little in the middle and then feel very rushed with its abrupt ending. But that's part of the charm I suppose thanks to its short runtime. It's still a very well-directed and entertaining monster mystery movie and hugely inspirational for werewolves everywhere.
