Then the stupidest gore begins and those who remain get caught in an M Night Shamalan world. Why would the main character shoot her friend? How would the cult leader find her families house? Eliza Dushku delivers an incredible performance and brings strength, emotion, and determination to the lead role. She truly carries the film and gives audiences a character worth rooting for throughout the chaos. I was hoping it would sit alongside early-2000s horror like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake or the Friday the 13th remake, but it never comes close. At just over 80 minutes, it moves at a brisk pace and never overstays its welcome. The opening credits set an eerie tone, and the cast—Eliza Dushku and Desmond Harrington included—do their best with limited material. But that’s where the positives end. The tension never fully builds, the kills are forgettable, and the mutant antagonists lack any real screen presence, coming off more generic than terrifying. Despite its cult reputation, it feels like a very standard backwoods slasher with little to set it apart. It’s not terrible, just disappointingly average and instantly forgettable.
