Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times Nov 20, 2018

It's unfortunate, then, that this earnest, hard-working adaptation of the 2006 Michelle Wildgen novel... isn't a more satisfying dramatic portrayal of the disease and its impact. Go to Full Review Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter Nov 20, 2018

Swank delivers an emotionally and physically committed performance that significantly elevates the sometimes mawkish material. Go to Full Review Marc Snetiker Entertainment Weekly Oct 11, 2014

Despite offering a well-timed look at the realities of the disease, the movie clunkily eschews cinematic creativity for emotional manipulation. Inquisitive ice-bucket challengers, consider yourselves warned. Go to Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Sep 6, 2019

Better than expected but not quite believable in every regard, You're Not You is at least an honest attempt to grapple with a portrait of the disease. Go to Full Review Morgan Rojas Cinemacy Nov 8, 2018

Based off Michelle Wildgen's book of the same name, You're Not You is both comical and touching, heartfelt and quirky, and an excellent performance piece about the power of friendship. Go to Full Review Carolina Ruiz En Filme Dec 12, 2015

This is not a new premise, but it manages to create empathy in the audience through a great story about vulnerability and extreme dependence. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Kate J @Kattie82 Apr 15, 2026 Absolutly loved this movie , the struggle ALS took on her her husband and those surrounding them. Her finding the love and care from a stranger that gave her back some glow before it was her time to pass. I fell it was well put together and touched the heart on so many levels you could feel it through the movie. A must watch 100% See more Lakia C @Motormouth75 Feb 2, 2026 I loved the movie. I know having ADHD and autism are no where near the same as having ALS. Hilary Swank did a fantastic job at showing how ALS effects a person, gradually removing every aspect we take advantage of constantly. This is a beautiful movie, well done by everyone involved. Try to not be distracted while watching because the story has many intricacies you may miss if you aren't focused. Thank you to all for sharing this work of art! The only real gripe I have with the movie is that it could have been a half hour to an hour longer and I'd have enjoyed it more. The scenes were cut up, with so many scenes only having maybe 10 seconds, then moving on. Those scenes could have easily been two or three times as long, 30 seconds or longer, and had just as much affect, if not more. See more Roy V @RT30253098 Jul 6, 2023 My mother died 2 years ago in October. Movies are invitations to experiences felt or never felt before. I've had the privilege of taking care of my aging parents for the past 12 years. Mom was both mobile and Lucid up until the day she died. I'm still taking care of Dad who is also both mobile and lucid. Hillary and Emmy wash away the critique and have allowed me the joy that I presently experience As a caretaker! That's what talented thespians do. See more Read all reviews
