See more Rowan C @RowanC3 Aug 25 Zero Dark Thirty is a very realistic movie about the hunting of Osama Bin Laden over the course of 10 years. Maya is the CIA agent responsible for finding the location of Osama, and she best represents Alfred Francis Bikowsky in real life. Osama was tied to so many people and made it almost impossible to track him down. This movie did not have a ton of action, besides the infiltration of his compound at the end. They showed more attacks after 9/11 and even the CIA base bombing in Khost, Afghanistan. I gave this a higher rating than Saving Private Ryan only because I like stories about the Middle East better than stories about World War 2. Jessica Chastain did an excellent job in her role, and she really showcased the stress these people were under during that time. The infiltration at the end was especially sick, and the stealth Blackhawk helicopters were even better. Overall, this was a very accurate and brutal representation of the troubling time period after the events of 9/11. See more F R @FR2021 Jul 25 What a movie! Great action, suspense, very compelling. See more Chris S @Janomi Jul 6 Zero Dark Thirty is a very strong procedural thriller, shaped by Kathryn Bigelow’s cold, controlled direction. She avoids turning the hunt for Bin Laden into a simple revenge story and instead gives the film the patience of an investigation and the pressure of a thriller. Jessica Chastain gives the movie its intensity as Maya. She is obsessive, disciplined, isolated, and increasingly consumed by the mission, and Chastain makes that determination feel both powerful and unsettling. The film is also excellent at showing the slow intelligence process: dead ends, interrogations, bureaucracy, analysis, mistakes, and persistence. The Abbottabad raid is brilliantly staged, quiet, tactical, and gripping without becoming flashy. The main weakness is that the same realism and restraint can make parts of the film feel dry and clinical. Maya is compelling, but emotionally distant. Even so, Zero Dark Thirty is a tense, well-executed thriller that does a lot right.
