Clever, chaotic TV writer Saoirse, glamorous, stressed-out mother of three Robyn, and dependable, inhibited carer Dara have been a tight-knit group since school. Now in their late 30s, but still as close as ever, these three friends are about to embark on the most thrilling adventure of their lives. When an email arrives, telling them about the death of the estranged fourth member of their childhood gang, a series of eerie events at her wake set them on a dark, dangerous and hilarious odyssey through Ireland and beyond as each tries to piece together the truth of the past. A show about friendship, memory and what happens when life doesn’t turn out quite like you'd expected.

From Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee comes an Irish tale powered by women and full of mirth and menace. It’s the kind of Netflix surprise we all need right now. Go to Full Review
Judy Berman TIME Magazine 3d
Even if you’re over whodunits, McGee’s cleverly meta spin on an overdone genre and her genius for comedy, dialogue, and character development make for an altogether good craic. Go to Full Review

Behind the slapstick, this is a serious exploration of female friendship and the devastating ripple effects of trauma. Go to Full Review

How To Get To Heaven From Belfast is a sharply funny examination of how friendships change over time as well as a pretty darn good mystery. Go to Full Review

4.5/5
With odd characters, brilliantly quick humor, and a sarcastically dry tone, the show makes for a wonderful binge, one that can make you look at yourself sideways because of what you just laughed at. Go to Full Review

Part murder-mystery, part meditation on ageing and nostalgia, it's an expertly plotted detective story that frequently borders on slapstick, with a great pop soundtrack. Go to Full Review

Jonathan M @Jonathan555 13h It has some snappy, funny dialog, with a lot of odd characters, which I like, Seems like a Guy Ritchie series in the way it bounces around. The jury is out as to how it concludes. See more Abbie B @Wagpool 14h A brilliant mix of drama and humour - a fresh take on a classic trope, leaving enough room for speculation as you’re watching and giving satisfying answers. I thought the characters were incredibly well written, and the storyline had me on the edge of my seat See more Marc M @MarcM 23h Love this show! It's hilarious and smart. Like a mashup of Derry Girls and Bad Sisters, with a little bit of.... I dunno... Peewee Herman or something thrown in. See more Zulaiha M @Mei-Z 1d I was so excited to watch this, having loved a lot of Lisa McGee's previous works, and sure it was entertaining in the beginning, but I had gotten bored by the 6th episode... The plot was all over the place, and went on longer than was necessary. It could have been well done, but the jumping around from place to place, different settings, and too many unnecessary characters, just made it very messy. The ending was also quite lackluster. A tighter script, and subsequently fewer episodes, probably would have made this much more enjoyable. See more Moe D @MoeInAVL 1d I truly loved Derry Girls and hoped I’d feel the same about How to Get to Heaven From Belfast. Perhaps my appreciation for the former led to too grand of expectations for the latter, because in my view they are nowhere close in terms of quality and satisfaction The acting in How to Get to Heaven is solid and the characters are relatable. There’s a lot of dark humor similar to what made Derry Girls so enjoyable. The plot gets off to a decent and interesting start, but midway through the plot becomes so absurd that it loses much of its appeal. By then, I was too invested not to see the series through to the finish, but where I didn’t want Derry Girls to end, I was relieved to reach the conclusion of How to Get to Heaven. Worth a watch … depending on what else is available. See more Duke A @I.am.me 1d Boring AF. Unlikable, bitchy characters. Not funny and not interesting. See more Read all reviews
