Critics Consensus

Injecting a heavy dose of hormones and humor into the Star Trek universe, Starfleet Academy marks a refreshing tonal shift that proves this franchise still has plenty of new thematic territory to explore.

The sets are brighter, the dialogue is sharper, with more expletives than expected from the elders as well as the kids, and the character development is strong across the board. Go to Full Review

“Starfleet Academy” is not a particularly serious story... When the show wants to be funny, though, it is. Go to Full Review

A promising collection of characters and storylines just setting the table for future achievement, not quite ready to prove its value beyond the legends of Kirk and Spock. Go to Full Review

Starfleet Academy... encapsulates all the best parts of Star Trek, and some of the bad sides as well. And while it won't be for everyone, it is still Trek, through and through. Go to Full Review

The elements are there, but the writing falters and fails to solidify the concept, dragging down a series that, at least in its early stages, doesn't know what story to tell or how to tell it. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Daniel O 3d I tried to gave it a chance but this break Star Trek and take it to the dumpster. Bad aching and full of nonsense. Star Trek is more for adults and no for a generation that no even watch any of the movies and prior shows. See more Han D @Banana2121 3d Whilst pacing was a little hit and miss during the first couple of episodes and chemistry was still forming it is very much Trek and the latest episode was amazingly written, produced and directed. It was incredibly tense and intense. The acting skills of all those involved made it a masterpiece. I now feel spoiled by streaming and want next week's episode now! Holly Hunters performance opposite Paul Giamatti was very well acted and honestly got me worked up. The B plot between Zoë Steiner and Sandro Rosta is great development for their characters and was woven into the A plot beautifully. I will honestly say I DID NOT see that coming!! Watch and find out, but sheesh. Ouch!! As always a steller performance from all the cast old and new and a show that is very much finding it's footing in the Star Trek Universe and digging it's heels in See more Sean K @KELLEYSB 3d Aside from all the ways that it doesn't feel like Star Trek, it's just boring and meh. There is a bunge of cringe, but those instances are almost exciting compared the complete lack of care it creates for the viewer. See more Richard M. @rich_06 3d The show is great do not listen to the hate comments! I think those who dislike the show dislike it because it’s not like the original shows. The actors do a great job portraying their characters and they have a good depth. See more Gerald M 3d After 6 episodes of this "Star Trash" I'm going to stump exponentially harder for "The Orville" Season 4. At least with that you get all of the humor and levity that this spit tries for and fails miserably at with everything I loved and adored in pre-Kurtzman Star Trek. See more N M @Mills3233 3d Awful. Why does Holly Hunter think she needs to lounge around like a toddler? The 90210 of Star Trek. See more Read all reviews
